Excursions
Life at the fullest! With this Amazon Experience, choose from a wide range of stand-out Amazon excursions, including options for family, adventure, wildlife, and being at active participant in on-going scientific studies at our lodges. Do it at your own pace and create your own, custom experience.
Night Walk
At first, you were a little nervous about the Jungle Night Walk, taking uncertain steps onto the dark trail and fidgeting with your headlamp. But soon, your eyes adjust, and a new world opens up to you. While many animals sleep, others emerge, making the Amazon their own. These weird, otherworldly creatures of the night — giant insects, frogs, snakes, and more — are ripe for discovery.
Amazon Birdwatching
As you trek through the marshy forest, a tiny flash of color catches your eye. Your guide motions towards it, setting up his telescope and honing in with his binoculars. Maybe it’s a Manakin or even a small Trogon? Finally, the bird comes into focus: it’s a Collared Puffbird, as fluffy and lovely as any jungle bird could be. In fact, this bird is just one of the hundreds you can spot on our birdwatching activities and tours.
Overlook Trail
Deep within the dense forest, the only hints that the river lies below come from its soft, flowing sound and brief glimpses of water through the trees. As the air becomes fresher and lighter on the River Overlook Trail, it seems like you’re getting near. Then, all of a sudden, you break through the trees and see it: the vast, splendid Tambopata River in all its glory.
Sunset Cruise
Twilight descends early in the jungle. Under the thick tree cover of the rainforest, darkness falls quickly, when the light cannot slip through the foliage any longer. But here, in a canoe drifting gently down the Tambopata River, it’s another story. Freed from the dense jungle canopy, glistening sunlight streams down for much of the day. Now, as afternoon slips into evening, you’re about to see one of the world’s most spectacular sunsets. The Sunset Cruise floats down the wide river, countless oranges and pinks reflecting off the water in lovely patterns.
Rainforest Tattoo
Getting tattooed in the Rainforest? No worries, we´ll prepare a paste from a fruit called “huito”, and achiote or other natural dies to draw tattoos on ourselves. We can draw different shapes of animals or other patterns associated with the forest. They only last a few days.
Bamboo Trail
It all feels a little surreal. As the afternoon light filters through thin, spindly leaves stretched out like fingers, you delve into the Bamboo Trail. Just to the left, the tranquil river glints through narrow green stalks. All around you, strange and unusual wildlife thrives — many animals who only call these bamboo forests home.
Monkey Search
As you trek through the floodplain forest, the air hums with sound. Walking with your guide, these sounds are strange and unfamiliar: caws, screeches, even purrs. By the end of your Monkey Search, you’ll find many of the animals the sounds correspond to. In fact, here comes number one: a crashing brash, a wind-like roar. You’ve spotted your first Red Howler Monkey, and many more will follow.
Night Lectures
After a day spent exploring the Amazon jungle's incredible beauty, we do something a little different during the evening. As you relax at the lodge, our guides give you a taste of our rainforest initiatives. These Night Lectures enrich your experience and immerse you in fun, engaging stories and experiences.
Amazon Creek Trail Hike
As you and your guide start out along the Wild Creek Trail, the soft sound of flowing water surrounds you. During the wet season, this little jungle brook overflows with rain. During the dry season, however, parts of the creek dry up. But all year long, its watery ecosystem brings life to dozens of unique creatures.
Colorado Macaw Clay Lick
You set out on the canoe as the sun begins to rise, illuminating the Tambopata River with soft light. Just a few minutes later, you arrive at the rocky shore of a nearby sandbar and start to trek over the sand with your guide. When you emerge on a lush, primordial bluff, you set up a stool and sip a much-needed coffee, scanning the treetops for movement. The sun rises higher in the sky; it’s almost to the canopy. Will the birds come to the Colorado Macaw Clay Lick?
Island Exploration & Pond
Your canoe lands on the rocky shore with a soft “thump,” and you disembark onto the beach. Just a few minutes from the lodge, this river island is another world. You climb a small, sandy hill, cross the long beach dotted with Cocoi Herons and Side-Necked Turtles, and enter the forest. What will you find during your Island Exploration and Pond Platform adventure? From rare birds to fierce reptiles, you’ll soon discover for yourself.
Adventure to the Bowl
After rising before dawn, you’re prepared for a unique Amazonian challenge: the Adventure to the Bowl. You trek down trails with your guide, moving from Terra Firme forest into Palm Swamps, crossing creeks and passing silently through elegant stands of bamboo.
The World of Butterflies
You and your guide tread silently along the trail, trying not to step on cracking leaves or snapping branches. These trails around our Tambopata Research Centre lodge are rich with animal and plant life. Today, however, you’re after something more elusive: the colorful butterflies that flit around our Tambopata forests.
Secrets of the Surroundings
As you prepare to leave your room after an afternoon siesta, you spot a family of Red Howler Monkeys in the trees right outside. Then, on the way to meet your guide, a Blue Morpho Butterfly flits overhead and Macaws screech loudly in the canopy above. That’s just life here at our Tambopata Research Centre lodge! Teeming with life, it’s one of the most biodiverse places you’ll ever visit. On our Secrets of the Surroundings walk, you’ll discover the rich flora and fauna around the lodge — at a relaxed, tranquil pace.
Macaw Project Lecture
After you finish a delicious dinner at the lodge, you gather around the cozy sofas on the far end of the Dining Room. Surrounded by jungle, you’re about to discover one of the Amazon’s most iconic creatures: the majestic Macaw. During our Macaw Project Lecture, you’ll hear all about our researchers’ cutting-edge work on these beautiful birds. Best of all, you learn from the experts themselves!
Giants of the Amazon
This five-kilometer trail covers the prototypical rain forest with immense trees criss-crossed by creeks and ponds. Amongst the figs, Ceibas, and Shihuahuacos we will look for Squirrel, Brown Capuchin, and Spider Monkeys as well as peccaries. TRC is located within this habitat.
Palm Swamp Trail
The air seems to grow thicker, the ground wetter, as you step gingerly onto the Palm Swamp Trail. This is a far cry from the high and dry Terra Firme forest, and fertile Floodplain forest, that you’ve already trekked through. The Palm Swamp is something else entirely: a wholly unique ecosystem, low and wet and incredibly diverse, ripe for you to explore. A brilliant flash of blue and gold whishes past, while exotic fruits and frogs commingle in the muddy puddles below. This is like nowhere you’ve been before — even within the Amazon.
The Rainforest Master Hike
After rising early in the morning, you trek into the jungle with your knowledgable guide in tow to begin your Rainforest Master Hike. Over the next six hours, you’ll spot countless animals and plants of incredible beauty.
