Trillion-tonne iceberg breaks away from ice shelf in Antarctica

One of the biggest icebergs on record, weighing 1 trillion tonnes has broken away from the Larsen C Ice Shelf in Antarctica. It is so large that it will require the map of the Antarctic to be redrawn. It is roughly the size of Bali.

The iceberg is one of the largest recorded and its future progress is difficult to predict. It may remain in one piece but is more likely to break into fragments. Some of the ice may remain in the area for decades, while parts of the iceberg may drift north into warmer waters.

Sources say the iceberg won’t have an impact on sea levels as it was already floating before breaking away completely.
